At Chaffey College, Distance Education (DE) is another name for taking an online class. Traditional (face-to-face, on campus) classes may provide information online (enhanced), but in a "distance education" class, a partial (hybrid) or all (online) of the learning takes place on the Internet. DE courses provide students with greater flexibility to their learning by having access to their class from anywhere at anytime. Students are also expected to complete assignments and/or other online activities (quizzes, tests, etc.) according to the syllabus and to interact with their instructor and other students.
DE courses are NOT designed to be easier than traditional classes. DE classes are designed with the same content and academic rigor as regular classes with the difference of how the course material is delivered. Students should expect to spend the same amount of time (sometimes even more) reading, writing, and studying for DE classes as they would in regular classes. Students succeed in DE classes when they manage their time well, log into DE classes regularly, submit completed work on time, meet class expectations, and communicate with their instructor effectively.
