The innovative Higher Education Diploma in Dental Technology is designed to educate and train dental technicians and prepare them for registration with the General Dental Council (GDC) and to practice as a dental technician.
The diploma is delivered in collaboration between the University of the Highlands and Islands and the University of Aberdeen Dental School and Hospital, supported by NHS Grampian and NHS Education for Scotland. Like all new courses within dentistry, the diploma will have provisional approval from the GDC until the first students have completed the entire programme.
Dental technicians focus on the manufacture and repair of custom-made dental appliances under prescription of a dentist. Most Dental technicians work in independent private sector dental laboratories and with NHS Health Boards in hospitals.
