B.Sc Mechanical Engineering
This mainstream program at AUM covers all the fundamental principles of mechanical engineering, aimed to produce highly qualified engineers equipped with skills to research, design, develop, manufacture, manage, and control engineering systems and their components. Courses cover areas of mechanics, design, fluids, thermal, materials, systems and technology; where students gain a sound theoretical and practical understanding of modern engineering technologies underpinned by lectures and laboratory courses that are designed to enhance their competence in mathematical and scientific principles. The program opens the door for students to pursue a wide range of careers in industry, academia or lay the foundation for graduate studies.
Program Educational Objectives
The Program Educational Objectives of the Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering is to matriculate graduates who conduct themselves in a responsible, professional and ethical manner, and who after graduation, are committed to :
Discovery
- Assuming leadership roles in the practice of engineering in industry and government.
- In such a competitive global economy, continue to conduct innovative research and development activities towards advancing the discipline and technology.
- Innovative application and execution skills
- Applying their engineering problem solving skills to various career paths.
Learning
- Actively and continually participating in professional opportunities for the sake of continuous development.
- Updating their core knowledge and developing new knowledge and skills to pursue new career opportunities, and to compete successfully.
Engagement
- Serving the engineering profession by setting the good example of an “Engineer”, inspiring others to develop a passion for engineering.
- Exchanging and applying knowledge to create new opportunities that advance the society and contribute to solve technical and societal issues.
- Advancing entrepreneurial initiatives and support sustainable economic development activities.
Student Learning Goals
The Program of Study follows the accreditation agency “the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology” (ABET) in learning outcome criteria implemented with AUM vision and educational philosophy. Graduates of Mechanical Engineering must have demonstrated :
- Ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering.
- Ability to design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data.
- Ability to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs within realistic constraints such as economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health and safety, manufacturability, and sustainability.
- Ability to function on multidisciplinary teams.
- Ability to identify, formulate, and solve engineering problems
- An understanding of professional and ethical responsibility
- Ability to communicate effectively
- The broad education necessary to understand the impact of engineering solutions in a global, economic, environmental, and societal context
- A recognition of the need for, and an ability to engage in life-long learning
- A knowledge of contemporary issues
- Ability to use the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice.
Accreditation plan is to approach ABET after the first batch of students have graduated for evaluation of the ME program. All guidelines required for this task shall be followed ahead of ABET team visit. Refer to the accreditation plan in item 4.8. Mechanical Engineering Curriculum
Career Opportunities
Mechanical engineering comprises a wide range of activities that include researching, designing, developing, manufacturing, managing, and controlling engineering systems and their components. The many industrial sectors to which mechanical engineers make substantial contributions include aerospace, automotive, biotechnology, chemical, computers and electronics, construction, consumer products, energy, engineering consulting, and thermal systems, among others. As such, mechanical engineering is the broadest of all of the engineering disciplines and provides the widest range of career opportunities. Graduates of Mechanical Engineering have gone on to become CEOs, entrepreneurs, chief engineers, business analysts, astronauts, faculty, physicians, and patent lawyers.
