A Medical Office Specialist is responsible for making sure the front office of a hospital, doctor’s office or clinic runs smoothly and must perform a variety of administrative duties including answering the telephone, greeting patients, scheduling doctor visits, maintaining patient records, and bookkeeping. The Medical Office Specialist may also be responsible for billing and coding.

According to the US department of Labor, Employment of medical secretaries is projected to grow 41 percent from 2010 to 2020, much faster than the average for all occupations. Employment growth will be driven by rapid growth of the healthcare and social assistance industries. An anticipated increase in the use of medical services by an aging population will require many additional medical secretaries.

The Medical Office Specialist program offers you the training you need to become a Medical Office Specialist, a medical receptionist, a scheduler, an insurance specialist, a diagnostic or procedural coder, and an Administrative Assistant in any office. You will master skills that will make you an asset in a wide variety of healthcare and general office settings. From scheduling appointments to managing medical records to filing insurance claims, you will understand the tasks for supporting patient and customer care from start to finish. You will also gain hands-on, practical experience in software applications, keyboarding, and medical billing and coding working with the main coding manuals in the field, the ICD-9-CM and the CPT.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
This program will prepare individuals for a career in medical office administration, medical records, health information technician, and medical office support. The program develops skills in medical office procedures, health insurance processing, billing and coding software applications, recordkeeping, filing systems, patient scheduling, and career development.

CLINICAL ROTATION
The student will enhance the skills they have gained in the classroom by putting them to use in a medical office environment as part of the curriculum.
