With the globalization process gaining momentum, the importance of international communication has increased. Contacts with the world at large in the fields of international relations, economics, law and politics has increased the need for communication, and therefore for translation and interpretation. Our department aims to educate the students and equip them with necessary knowledge and skills to enable them to satify this need as well as the sectoral needs for qualified translators in the areas of law, economics, medicine, tourism and media.

General Information About the Program

The program aims to provide specialised education on Turkish-English translation and interpretation with a specially designed curriculum consisting of core and general culture courses. All students are required to take a French course during their 7th term. Students can also benefit from other foreign language courses such as German, Italian, Russian or Greek. Some courses are practice-oriented, and these courses foresee the possible problems our students may encounter in their professional lives, and practical solutions to these problems are taught. During their 8th term, students take area electives on written or oral translation. Those who wish to gain in-depth expertise in written translation are offered various courses such as Literary Translation, Recording Technologies for Voice Cast and Dubbing Translation, Computer Supported Translation and Localisation while those wishing to gain expertise in oral translation may benefit from Simultaneous Translation, Conference Translation and Inter-cultural Communication courses. Exams may take various formats based on the contents and requirements of the courses: written, oral, project, presentation.

Education

The courses on the curriculum which have been designed to help the students to acquire the knowledge and skills required by the profession of translation and interpretation are taught through both in-class and out-of-class activities, and the students are trained so as to assume their responsibility of learning. The curriculum, which consists mainly of practice-oriented courses besides field-specific courses, offers courses from other disciplines such as technology, politics, social sciences, economics, literature, communication and media, all of which give the students a flexible outlook on life. Our department takes utmost care in delivering high quality education by putting a special focus on professional terminologies and latest technologies which would enable the students to become a modern translator with effective translation skills.

Facilities

With the course content based on application and aiming to meet the technological needs of the industry and with its expert teaching staff, the program aims to prepare students for their prospective professional lives. Our latest technology Computer Assisted Translation Lab, which gives opportunities for the use of analog and digital educational materials, helps our students enhance their knowledge and skills more efficiently and in a shorter time by offering them vast possibilities of the communication technology. This lab provides our students with the possibility of getting to know and to use various software used in translation and interpretation such as Trados. Moreover, this lab is the place where the students can find the opportunity to have practice in audio-visual and media translation. Additionally, our students benefit from internship opportunities at state and public institutions such as TRNC Ministry of External Affairs and TRNC Ministry of Culture and Tourism.

Career Opportunities

Possessing a diploma in Translation and Interpretation area is not only a privilege but also gives the candidates a strong foundation in the profession. Program graduates may pursue employment opportunities in various ministries in TRNC or TR, at international organisations such as the European Commission, international institutions such as United Nations, international companies, state offices, media and tourism sectors, banks, universities, import-export sectors and freelance translation and interpretation.
