Eastern Mediterranean University Cyprus Famagusta, North Cyprus 2014-04-04

The Music program offers a B. M. in music, focusing on the development of each student’s musical skills whether it be instrumental performance, musical ear, music theory and history, or composing. Each candidate is chosen after an audition and interview, testing for the presence of a musical ear, a certain level of instrumental ability, and a general musical aptitude. The program aims to foster and develop musicians in different areas, taking notice of each individual student’s interests and abilities.

General Information About the Program

Students admitted into the program will each be assigned to study a major instrument. Those majoring in composition study piano, unless they have previously excelled in another instrument. Those students already playing an instrument at the point of entry will continue instruction in that particular instrument. Students majoring in an instrument other than piano will have one year of piano/ keyboard training, while all students receive choral training and are required to take part in chamber music and orchestral performance. The senior year will include a senior- project when each student will have a choice of presenting a recital, composition or thesis for graduation, under the supervision of a staff member.

Education

The music program follows six streams: piano, flute, violin, cello, voice and composition. Students who complete the required number of credits for their stream will be entitled to graduate from the program. Apart from the required courses, some of which have pre-requisites, students have to take three elective courses throughout their studies in the program. Moreover, the first three semesters for each stream include a course in English to enhance the students’ abilities in reading, writing and research; necessary skills for reading literature and writing papers on music.

Facilities

Classes are conducted in air conditioned rooms containing video and DVD players. Five of these mirrored rooms contain one piano per three students. Also available is a Petrof grand piano for concerts, two smaller Yamaha pianos and a digital piano. Two rooms with overhead projectors and projectors are also at the disposal of students. A large variety of musical instruments are also available for students to practice.

Career Opportunities

The aim of the program is to prepare its students as qualified musicians for graduate studies and/or for a professional career. Graduates leaving the music program can take Teaching Certificate courses to become teachers or find positions in conservatories. They can also work as professional musicians for orchestras or music bands or find positions in various institutions as arts/culture advisors.
