Associate of Applied Science Degree in Nursing
Location(s) Offered: Houston Northwest
Designed Program Length: 76 Weeks
The College of Health Care Professions (CHCP) offers a pre-licensure Associate of Applied Science Nursing Degree Program that leads to eligibility to apply and to take the NCLEX - RN examination for licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Texas. Upon graduation, students of the program will be awarded the Associate of Applied Science Degree in Nursing. This program is specifically designed as an LVN to RN Transition Program using a concept-based curriculum. Once accepted, the student is enrolled in a full-time course of study which is divided into four 16-week semesters and one 12-week semester. Graduates of this program may find employment in areas such as hospitals, clinics, home health-care agencies and physician offices.
Registered Nurses (RNs) provide and coordinate patient care, educate patients and the public about various health conditions and provide advice and emotional support to patients and their family members. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics*, employment of Registered Nurses is projected to grow 19% from 2012 to 2022, faster than the average for all occupations. Growth will occur for a number of reasons, including an increased emphasis on preventative care; growing rates of chronic conditions, such as diabetes and obesity; and demand for health care services from the baby boomer population, as they live longer and more active lives.
