Bilingual Authorization Program

Candidates in the Spanish Authorization for Bilingual Educators (SABE) program earn a bilingual authorization that can be added to any California teaching credential. This authorization allows teachers to provide instruction in students’ primary language (Spanish) and English.

The SABE Program is well-positioned and committed to addressing and supporting the diverse instructional and educational needs of emergent bilingual students by providing a high quality, effective and culturally responsive teacher preparation education program.

The SABE Program’s primary goals include bilingualism, biliteracy, cross-cultural understanding, and high academic achievement for emergent bilinguals. The program is designed to provide opportunities for candidates to develop the knowledge, skills, and abilities to become effective bilingual education teachers. Program graduates will create responsive and inclusive learning environments for linguistically and culturally diverse students.  Earning this authorization allows teachers to meet the demands of a rapidly evolving and increasingly multicultural society.

Grounded in a rigorous, inquiry-based clinical practice model emphasizing
Cal Poly’s “learn-by-doing” approach, the program prepares candidates to meet the following goals:

• Link education theory and classroom practice to effectively design learning environments, curriculum, and instructional practices that foster the success of bilingual learners;
• Convey to a diverse student population the importance of recognizing and employing language and culture as resources;
• Prepare teachers that are responsive to the needs of their students;
• Strive for equity in schools and society through collaborative efforts with K-12 schools, families, and other educational partners.
