Institute of Asian Studies
The Institute of Asian Studies (IAS) is a full-time research organization within the Universiti Brunei Darussalam located in the historic Sultanate of Brunei. The Institute boasts of excellent research facilities and support. The Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD), Brunei’s national university, is currently accepting applications from students for admission to its PhD programme in Critical Asian Studies to commence in January and August of every year.
UBD is located on the world’s 3rd largest island of Borneo. Its strategic location next to one of the world’s busiest sea-lanes in the South China Sea provides an environment conducive to study. An ecologically friendly and beautiful campus with a growing pool of international experts on Asian affairs makes it an excellent place to pursue intensive Asian focused research work.

Areas of Research Concentration
With their academic home at the newly established Institute, the graduate students will carry out multidisciplinary research under the close supervision of senior researchers in the following five areas, namely Borneo Studies, South China Sea Studies, Popular Culture, Economic and Financial Integration in Asia, and Human/ Capital Movements in Asia.

Graduate Research Scholarships
Universiti Brunei Darussalam introduced Graduate Research Scholarships in 2010 to facilitate and promote research degrees and thus further develop the University into a research-intensive university, and also to expand and enhance the quality of graduate programmes and graduates.
The scholarships are open for candidates on a competitive basis. To be eligible a candidate must be under 40, enrolled full-time in the PhD programme and demonstrate a good academic track record.
The Graduate Research Scholarship includes a monthly allowance of B$1,500 (Maximum period of 3 years for PhD programme); passage to Brunei Darussalam from and back to home country; a one-time payment for allowances for field research of B$3,000.00; tuition fee waiver.
