The Faculty of Communication and Media Studies offers thesis-based graduate program leading to degree of Master of Arts (M.A.) in the field of Communication and Media Studies. Communication and information technologies and global communication networks have had a profound influence on the relationship between political, economic, and social institutions worldwide, and promise to continue reshaping these institutional and social relationships at an increasing rate in the foreseeable future. It is imperative that professionally and intellectually prepared students are available to take up the educational and professional roles and responsibilities that these changes are undoubtedly going to reshape. The objective of the graduate program in Communication and Media Studies is to ground students in the theoretical and professional knowledge that they need in order to engage effectively and ethically responsibly in the information and communication age—as both scholars and as professionals. Our transdisciplinary program has internal flexibility, allowing for a variety of emphases that cater to individual student needs while simultaneously providing common grounds in the theoretical bases of communication research and practice.

Admission Requirements

Applicants are expected to hold a BA degree in communication and media studies or a related discipline. Students who do not have a BA degree in communication related fields (journalism, public relations and advertising, radio, television and cinema, visual communication design) must take three deficiency courses from the undergraduate programs. These courses are; Introduction to Communication Studies; Theories of Mass Communication; Cultural Studies.

All candidates must satisfy the requirements of the EMU Institute of Graduate Studies and Research as well as the departmental requirements Students who do not have a BA degree in communication related fields must take three deficiency courses from the master’s program in communication and media studies. These courses are; Mass Communication and Society; Selected Readings in Mass Communication Studies; Research Methods for Communication Studies.

Communication theories and research methods, broadcasting and film studies, journalism studies, public relations, advertising, visual arts and communication design, global communication networks, mass media and democracy, gender and communication, cyberspace, virtual reality, hypertext, ethics of communication, intellectual property rights, cultural studies, political economy of communication, integrated marketing communications, media representations, peace journalism, intercultural communication, media ethnography, media history, new communication technologies, communication education, media effects, political communication.
