Population dynamics of oyster reefs(65 %)

The invasive Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas) has populated most of the former in theGerman Wadden Sea existing mussel beds. In its function as an ecosystem engineeringspecies it forms reefs which are extremely resistant to mechanical stress. The focus of theproject are experimental investigations on the Pacific oyster and the mussel under waveload. Methodologically, the research questions are addressed using field studies todetermine relevant distribution patterns and geometric parameters, laboratory investigationson wave effects as well as conceptual work on the future numerical modelling of relevantprocesses. Considerations are made on the parameterisation of rough reefs and musselbeds for the experimental investigations. The candidate will generate ecological parameters, such as length frequency distributions, abundances, coverage rates. In cooperation with theproject partners the candidate will determine and digitalise selected oyster reefs and musselbeds by 3D scanners. Based on this data and a parameterised characterisation, appropriateproduction methods for the models are investigated in terms of their suitability.

The anticipated outcomes are roughness and wave dissipation parameters for coastalengineers and authorities for numerical modelling including the growth state variation andspatial distribution of oyster reefs, which are necessary to answer hydro- andmorphodynamic issues.
